Lesson 3: Using Type to Understand Your Relationships with Others

Objective: To reflect on how understanding temperament and type contribute to our relationships with others

The most important outcome of the study of personality types is learning to value our differences. In this lesson, you will learn how an appreciation of the diversity of personality types can contribute to your relationships.

Montgomery describes one dynamic that can occur in a relationship with two different temperaments or types as "the Pygmalian Project." In this scenario, we try to make other people of different types over into carbon copies of ourselves. We can overcome this obstacle to positive relationships by learning to appreciate the types of others.

This lesson's assignments focus on examining how temperament and type can impact our relationships with the significant others in our lives.

Assignment 1: Read the following articles on temperament and relationships.

Read about the functions of the types.

Assignment 2: Keep a journal of reflections.

Keep a journal on your feelings and communications toward others for one week. Include reflections on how temperament or type differences could be influencing the dynamics of your communications.
